What Is A Home Energy Rating???

Photo 1 - Wide View of Blower Door

Basically, a home energy rating or HERS* rating consists of an evaluation of a residential or small commercial building to determine the energy overall energy efficiency of the structure and it's components. Certain calibrated tools are needed to conduct a HERS rating, especially a blower door.

Please look at Photo 1 on the left for a picture of a blower door. Information is gathered either at the site or via plans (blueprints) that influence the energy usage of the structure, such as window/door sizes and orientation, insulation types and amounts in walls, ceilings and other places,

The fan on the blower door has several "rings" that can be removed to accomodate homes that range from "leaky" to "very tight".

DG-3 Digital Pressure Gauge

A digital pressure gauge is used to measure the air pressure in terms of "pascals". This gauge is portable and can be moved throughout the home, apartment or small business to find air leaks, low or high pressure areas and/or problems with the ductwork.

Laptop with Tek Tite II Software

All of the information from the blower door test and details about the structure are fed into a laptop computer containing proprietary software. Other products that can be used in a HERS rating is a DuctBlaster and the APT - Automated Performance Testing system.
